I couldn't find it in Keter Shem Tob, De Sola pool, etc, but what is the S&P minhag for whether to stand or sit for Friday Night and Shabbat Day Kiddush at home, as well as Habdalah?
It's wonderful to see my colleague Rabbi Doniel Kramer sharing with the wider Orthodox Jewish world the beauty of the Western Sephardic observance of Tisha B'av in the YU Torah To Go booklet, and encouraging people to tune into the webcasts from Congregation Shearith Israel - The Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue. Wishing everyone an easy and meaningful fast.
Huge props to Aharon N. Varady of the the Open Siddur Project for uploading a scan of the Isaac Leeser Sephardic Fast Days prayer book just in time for 17 Tammuz and Tisha B'ab
While browsing on YouTube last night, I came across this beautiful video of a lecture/choir performance held at Bevis Marks in 2011 on the history and music of S&P in London - I'm sure others will enjoy if you haven't seen it before [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otXVoD2QYyY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otXVoD2QYyY)
I was so happy when I opened the new PJ Library book and saw that it was about Shabbat and in Ladino! So awesome that hundreds and maybe thousands of American Jewish kids are going to be exposed to the Sephardic traditions, even if in a superficial way.
In the attached picture, the US Conservative movement claims that there is A Sephardic custom to read Iyob on Kippur; however I can’t find evidence of this practice in any Sephardic tradition, Western or otherwise. Does anyone have any ideas if this is indeed a Sephardic minhag, or perhaps if the editor mixed it up with the inclusion of Iyob on Tishnga B’ab?
This is very sad to see. I hope not too much damage to Shearith Israel graves of any others for that matter...
My brother will be visiting Amsterdam In a few weeks. 2 questions - - will he be safe wearing a kippah around the city?-any sights that he shouldn’t miss Jewishly or any other suggestions for an observant Jewish tourist?Thank you so much and kol tub.
Starting the little one early on S&P melodies. Hodesh Tob!
I have an extra copy of the older printing of the De Sola Pool Festivals Book (as I recently upgraded to the with intermediate days version!).Selling for $15 or best offer plus shipping in US or pickup in NY. In good condition, other than cover being taped on inside and outside.
As we prepare for Rosh Hashanah, for those who read Hebrew I highly recommend this great article and commentary on the beloved S&P Rosh Hashanah Piyyut Et Shangarei Raton by Prof. Shlomit Elitsur, originally in her book Piyyut Baparasha.
Although our British members have probably seen this piece, I found it fascinating as an American who has only ever prayed in the New York and Philadelphia communities to read about services in London (particularly from the perspective of an outsider).
It only just came to my attention that there was an issue of Tradition (journal of the Rabbinical Council of America) in honor of Rabbi Dr. David de Sola Pool which was guest edited by Rabbi Marc Angel. There are some great S&P related articles in there; the entire issues is available for free here
Is there anyone here who is a member of Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia? My wife and I prayed there on Shabbat morning and were warmly welcomed by Rabbi Gabbai and congregants. However, when I tried to go for Shaharit this morning at the time listed on the website the building was dark and locked. I’m just curious if there is usually a minyan during the week or not...
I recently learned of the S&P minhag of wearing tefillin at minha of minor fast days, and as far as I know this is not the practice of other Sephardim. Does anyone know the history of this practice?
Hodesh Tob!Does anyone know who runs the Yede Abraham website? I was sad to see that the hosting seems to have not been renewed and and it's currently impossible to access the website.
S and P is never too far- made me smile to see these Myer Myers silver beakers at the Met Museum of Art in NYC
Cross-posting from S&P Jewish Music & Liturgy. Todah in advance!Does anyone have an English translation of Bore 'Ad Ana that they could scan or send? I wanted to teach a shiur and am not sure I have the time to translate it myself. Todah Rabbah!
There is a discussion going on in another Facebook group I'm a part of about minhagim regarding the color of stripes on tallitot. I've noticed that those at Shearith Israel have blue stripes- is that a particular S and P minhag?
