In case anyone is in Montreal this Sunday....
I'd like to recommend this week's letter from the parnas (president) of Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia, Mark Wolfson. Contains lots of wonderful S&P history:
Hi...anyone here from Montreal? I'm planning a visit....
Just learned about this organization...interesting...
The Greek temple style seems to have been quite popular in the S&P communities...here you can see the old S&P synagogue in New Orleans (building on the left with columns)...
With many here eager to learn more about S&P melodies, I'd like to heartily recommend the following book and CD by the late hazan of Shearith Israel in New York, The Rev. Abraham Lopes Cardoso:www.amazon.com/Sephardic-Songs-Praise-Abraham-Cardoza/dp/B000GDIC38The melodies are beautiful, his renditions are beautiful, and it's really a precious resource, especially as he grew up in Amsterdam and was...
Ok, so here's a thought: we now have a lot of people in this burgeoning group (thank you, Yehudha!) from all over the world...many of whom would like to be part of an S&P/Western Sephardic minyan, but may not live near one...and so I wonder if there is a way here to geographically organize ourselves so as to know who else lives in the general vicinity...and would wish to create a minyan together. ...
Is there anyone who would like to learn the melody for the Shabbat Musaf? I have followed it for many years...and only recently taught myself how to lead it...and so I can tell you it's possible!
From the Jerusalem Post....
Hi All...if you know Italian, you can read below about the Livorno concert at Shearith Israel last week....a wonderful moment of connection between the Livorno and New York S&P communities:
Now in NY...kosher tapas...for Passover too.
Dear All,In case you might enjoy hearing a little about various S&P communities, thought I'd post this note on a recent visit to New Orleans. I was there to attend a Limmud conference (can read more about that here: www.limmudinternational.org). Basically, these are gatherings to learn and teach about a host of Jewish topics...all in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.I had a chance to give a talk on "T...

Hi All,Recently, I wrote about a visit to Lisbon. Below is part two on the Jewish community of Porto. Located in the north, Porto is Portugal's second-biggest city. And, unlike Lisbon which was devastated in a mid-1700s earthquake, much of Porto's old, narrow alley ways, where the Jews once resided, remain intact. It is those alley ways that inspired Harry Potter's author, JK Rowling,...along with...
Dear Friends, I was in Portugal this month and thought some of you might enjoy to hear a little about the Jewish community there. First, it should first be said that Portuguese in general are very warm and welcoming...no sign of the Inquisition anywhere!I met first with an American couple, David Gitlitz and Linda Davidson, two retired professors currently in Portugal to research how some Jews fled...
