This haunting family portrait gazes out to me every now and then. The handsome subject is my great-great uncle, born Nissim Kallos, though he went by his French name, Charles. Unlike the rest of his family he was a staunch secularist. He ran away from home to enlist to fight in the patriot cause during the Balkan Wars, and disappeared under mysterious circumstances. We have no idea what happened to him.
