An unusual find in Shearith Israel's burial register: Samuel Benrimo died on the first night of Shabu`ot 5610 (May 16th, 1850 - after sundown. )He was buried the next afternoon - on the first day of shavuot! Something that would never be done today. The note explains that this was done because the second day of Shavuot was Shabbat and he died suddenly with his wife and 9 children in the home. I.e. they needed to remove his body from the home as quickly as possible. This is a situation that would essentially never happen today with refrigeration and professional funeral homes. Also a good reminder if you ever come across an epitaph or other record indicating burial on the first day of a holiday there are certainly valid halakhic reasons that this could have taken place.
