Where else do rabbis and bishops mix with genealogists, professors, musicologists, filmmakers, writers, psychologists, cultural anthropologists and photographers to explore Jews who hailed from the Iberian coast, North Africa and beyond after the Expulsion in 1492?At the Society of Crypto-Judaic Studies! The purpose of the group is to nurture a global organization for those researching the history of Crypto-Jewish and Sephardic communities around the world. At their recent meeting June 26-28 in Santa Fe, New Mexico professors, retirees, students and scholars gathered to learn more about our common interest--Jews who were impacted by the Inquisition and forced to practice their faith in secret. Some carry a deep history of descendants within while others are curious onlookers like myself who feel passionate that the story of the disenfranchised needs to be told. Our common purpose is to learn and share what we know about these brave souls who were pursued around the world for almost 400 years. The programming covered everything from live musical performances and the arts to cultures around the world, residual trauma and personal narratives. With so many languages spoken--Spanish, Hebrew, Russian, Turkish, Filipino and mostly English--we became a mini United Nations. If you are exploring your Sephardic roots, join us next summer in Puerto Rico, where you will absorb the knowledge of the ages.
