A bit of Sunday morning trivia that arose from my investigations of the "Pre-Nassau" sinagogue here in Itamaracá, Brazil. It's the description in the key of a map of the village from the period. c.1640. As it is just a few words I spent a couple of hours trying to decipher it ! ..... Orthography of 400 years ago was "flexible", so I've developed a technique using Google Translate and a process of removing , rearranging and adding letters until I arrive at some possibly acceptable meaning. I came up with this "The place where justice is served" ... actually, served up, as in serving a meal etc.. This didn't seem to make much sense........ Then it struck me.......... it's a euphemism ! It's indicating where the gallows were ! .......... could this be the first recorded use of a euphemism ? LOL :-)
