Figure incontournable de la communauté juive du Maroc, **Léon Judah Benzaquen** (1901-1977) était avant tout médecin phtisiologue. Formé en France, il fut le premier marocain à être admis au prestigieux concours de l’Internat des Hôpitaux de Paris. Après ses études, il installa son cabinet médical à Casablanca, loin du Palais et de la politique, avec pour objectif d’enrayer la tuberculose qui sévissait au Maroc. Il créa le premier sanatorium du Maroc et œuvra dans de nombreuses activités communautaires sociales telles que l’OSE, dont il était un des membres fondateurs, l’Alliance Israélite Universelle, le Joint et l’Aide Scolaire. Ce seraient son activité de médecin et le concours qu’il apporta aux œuvres sociales qui le distinguèrent quand le Palais se mit en quête d’un juif marocain. Le roi Mohamed V, de retour d’exil, voulu envoyer un message fort à la communauté juive et lui demanda de participer au premier gouvernement du Maroc. Le Docteur Benzaquen se vit alors confier le poste de Ministre des PTT et de la Communication, poste qu’il occupa pendant deux gouvernements successifs, de 1955 à 1958. Dès lors, autorité morale incontestée, il se fit porte drapeau de la communauté juive marocaine. Après son mandat ministériel, il assuma la présidence de la communauté juive de Casablanca et la présidence d'honneur des communautés Israélites du Maroc avec dévouement jusqu’à sa mort, en 1977.
