Après sa mort, le précieux objet devait être transféré à la synagogue de Ponta Delgada, capitale de l’Archipel. Mais il n’en fut rien. On apprend qu’une caisse contenant des objets de culte aurait été envoyée à Lisbonne en 1866. Cette caisse ne serait jamais arrivée à destination. Contenait-elle notre Sefer Torah ?Nous sommes maintenant dans les années 1970 dans un bar de Porto Judeo, un village fondé par des juifs exilés. Un capitaine juif américain de la base aérienne de Lajes dans les Açores y prit ses habitudes, cherchant à recueillir des informations sur les juifs qui vécurent dans le village. Le tenancier du bar, comprenant qu’il avait affaire à un juif, sortit un jour une caisse en bois de derrière son comptoir « Nous avons quelque chose juif ! ». Il confia la caisse au capitaine. Elle contenait le parchemin nu de notre Sepher Torah enroulé sur ses deux tiges, ornées de deux rimonim. Le Capitaine Feldman (c’est son nom), fit fabriquer un manteau (Ashkénaze !) aux États-Unis pour le recouvrir. Dès lors, l’objet saint fut utilisé lors des services religieux de la base pour lire les portions hebdomadaires de la Torah (par le prélat chrétien local, la seule personne de la région capable de lire l’hébreu sans voyelles !). Lorsque Feldman termina sa mission aux Açores, il refusa de prendre le Sefer Torah avec lui.
