**Jamila Toledano - 108 year old Moroccan Jewess in Gibraltar **Jews’ Gate Cemetery, is the site of the earliest known Jewish burials in Gibraltar, known as “The Saddikim”, opened by 1746. Recently, I had the fortune to visit and find the tomb of my 7th great grandmother Jamila Toledano. I got to repaint the epitaph that had eroded over time with exposure to the elements. On the Gibraltar 1791 census Jamila is recorded as 90 years old, but on her tomb, in 1795 she is recorded as 108. No doubt someone exaggerated her age on her tomb but we can be sure she was very elderly and was likely born sometime between 1687 and 1701 in Morocco, possibly in Meknes. Her maiden name is unknown, she married a Toledano, but his first name is not know either (possibly named Baruh or Levy). Jamila had at least one son named Pinhas Toledano, also born in Morocco in about 1730 and died before 1783. Their descendants spread our to Livorno, London, Gibraltar, Tangier, St. Thomas and beyond.The epitaph on her tombs reads as follows: “The burial tombstone of the elderly righteous Jamila, may she rest in honour, mother of the deceased Mr. Pinhas Toledano, passed away at 108 years old, in the month of Shebat 5555 (1795)"Welcome to all who joined us this week!
