I have mentioned before that my Cohen Lobattos and Sarucos moved to Suriname in the 1700s from Amsterdam. Although I do not know the story of why for the former family, I know part of the story for the latter family. Attached is a page from the Registro dos Despachados of 1764 in which my 7th great grandfather, Israel de Joseph Saruco Gabay, and his son (and my 6th great grandfather Haim), agreed to move to Suriname for payment. They appear to be part of the large poor population in Amsterdam at the time.
