Visited the exhibition "Joods Den Haag" last Friday. The image has Francisco Lopes Suasso, aka Abraham Israel Suasso, baron, banker and backbone of the Jewish community in Amsterdam. He was a man in his own right and very assured of his power, influence and image. He loaned two million guilders to William III stadholder of Holand´s campaign to conquer England in 1688. When asked if he wanted a receipt, he rejected that, expressing his confidence in William III and his word. But it is the image that fascinates me most. It looks like modelled on portraits of Louis XIV, the sun king. It projects power, trust in the Dutch leadership as symbolised by the bowl with oranges at his side.He holds a cane as if it were a scepter, but above all it exudes confidence, power, and self-awareness in this picture.
