## *SEPHARDIC WORLD MEETING SUNDAY 15 AUGUST 2021*## *WITH SALOMON VAZ DIAS*## *SEPHARDIC TRADITIONS OF OLD AND NEW AMSTERDAM*The Western Sephardim created a unique religious tradition within Judaism. We cannot understand our ancestors without knowing the customs they followed. Two weeks ago Tirtsah Levie Bernfeld discussed the development of the Amsterdam community, and the arrival of refugees from the Balkans, from an academic perspective. This week ***Salomon Vaz Dias*** shares a religious perspective. The talk with focus on the minhagim – the religious traditions – of the Western Sephardim of Amsterdam and New York.The Talmud Torah congregation in Amsterdam is the mother congregation of the Sephardim in the Atlantic world. Shearith Israel in New York City also has an illustrious history. The meeting with focus on these congregations, although there will be reference to Shaar Asamaim ("Bevis Marks") in London and other communities. The talk will be accessible to people with basic understanding of Judaism and will provide an introduction to the Western Sephardic tradition.***Salomon Vaz Dias*** is a native of Amsterdam and descends from a prominent Sephardic family. He emigrated to New York in the 1990s. Salomon has offered his services as Sexton, Religious Director, and Assistant Cantor at the Sephardic congregations of Amsterdam and New York.The meeting is on Sunday 15 August 2021 at 11am in LA, 2pm NYC, 7pm London, 8pm Amsterdam, and 9pm Jerusalem.
