## *SEPHARDIC WORLD MEETING, SUNDAY 3 OCTOBER 2021*## *WITH TON TIELEN*## *AMSTERDAM RESEARCH: ETS HAIM SCHOOL, LIBRARY, AND CHARITY*On the 4th Sivan 5376 (1616) the Portuguese Congregations Bet Jacob and Neve Shalom founded the Ets Haim ("Tree of Life") school in Amsterdam. This school provided a high-quality education for Jewish men. Each classroom or grade at the school had a specialist library and there was also a general library where they could find every necessary book for their studies. Ets Haim is the oldest still-functioning Jewish library in the world.Generations of young Sephardic men studied at Ets Haim. The school produced a significant percentage of the Western Sephardic world's rabbis and teachers. A 'brotherhood' (and sisterhood!) funded Ets Haim's activities. Through the archives, we can discover nearly all the names of those who taught, studied, and graduated from Ets Haim, as well as the charity's members. It will also be possible to trace the evolution of the library as it developed over centuries.***Ton Tielen*** is an expert on the Jews of Amsterdam. He served as archivist of the Dutch Red Cross.
