Bosnia and Herzegovina was occupied by Austria-Hungary in 1878, creating opportunities for the territory's Jews. After the First World War, in the 1921 census of Yugoslavia, 10,000 of Sarajevo's 70,000 inhabitants listed Judeo-Espanjol as their native language. The Nazis invaded in 1941. During the War, 10,000 of Bosnia's 14,000 Jews were murdered. Solomon Gaon from Bosnia served as the last Haham of the Spanish & Portuguese Jews of London.***Francine Friedman*** is Professor of Political Science at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, USA. She is the author of three books about Bosnia and Herzegovina: The Bosnian Muslims: Denial of a Nation (Westview Press, 1996); Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Polity on the Brink (Routledge, 2004); and Like Salt for Bread. The Jews of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Brill, 2022).
