## *THE HOLOCAUST IN YUGOSLAVIA*## *SEPHARDIC WORLD, SUNDAY 24 APRIL 2022*## *WITH ESTHER GITMAN****Esther Gitman*** is an American historian and expert on the Holocaust in Yugoslavia. She was born into the Sephardic community of Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, in 1939 and her family fled the Nazi invasion when she was two years old. She earned a Ph.D. from City University in New York with a dissertation entitled Rescue of Jews in the Independent State of Croatia, 1941–1945. She received a Fulbright scholarship in 2002. Gitman has compiled databases on Jews from Sarajevo and Zagreb who survived the Holocaust. In 2011, she published When Courage Prevailed: The Rescue and Survival of Jews in the Independent State of Croatia 1941–1945 on the rescue of Jews in the Independent State of Croatia and the role of Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac. In 2019 she received the (Croatian) Order of Duke Branimir and published Alojzije Stepinac - Pillar of Human Rights.To mark Yom HaShoah on 27/28 April we have invited ***Esther*** to talk about her family’s experiences and the Holocaust in the former Yugoslavia. She will challenge popular perceptions, including highlighting the positive role of some Croatians and the Nazi sympathies of some Serbs.
