***Our apologies for the technical problems last week which prevented us from broadcasting. This week we are delighted to bring you Ian Pomerantz, with a special contribution from ethnomusicologist Judith Cohen.***## ***SEPHARDIC MUSIC FROM THE OUTSIDE IN***## ***WITH IAN POMERANTZ AND SPECIAL GUEST JUDITH COHEN***## ***SEPHARDIC WORLD SUNDAY 21 AUGUST 2022***The first Western interest in Judeo-Spanish secular song came from Spanish and German academics in the first quarter of the 20th Century. They encountered Sephardic Jews in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans, and North Africa. Early Spanish researchers saw the Jewish aspect of Sephardic identity as secondary to their subjects’ Hispanidad, their innate “Spanishness.”Twenty years after World War II, there was a resurgence of interest from outside of the Jewish world. Interest in Judeo-Spanish music again blossomed after 1992, the 500th anniversary of the Edict of Expulsion. Following the laws granting Sephardic Jews citizenship in Spain and Portugal, Judeo-Spanish music began circulating in unexpected places outside the Sephardic diaspora as a marker of or a connection to Sephardic identity. Ian Pomerantz will provide an overview of the past century of performance of Judeo-Spanish music by non-Jewish performers and communities and current global trends.***Ian Pomerantz*** is a classical musician, musicologist, polyglot, and heritage speaker of Ladino. He began his work in Judeo-Spanish language reclamation by researching his family’s origins in the Balkans and their immigrant experience in the United States during the 20th Century. Ian is a member of Ladinokomunita, a global correspondence circle completely in Ladino, The Sephardic Brotherhood of America, Sephardic Heritage International, DC, and is a contributor to El Amaneser, the world’s only surviving Ladino-language newspaper still in continuous print.
