Isaac Uziel, from Fez, was a renowned Haham in Amsterdam, who seems to have come to that city circa 1610. According to tradition, he was involved in the establishment of Neve Salom. One of the three early communities in Amsterdam. He died in Amsterdam in 1622 and was buried on 3 April that year in Beth Haim the burial place of the Portuguese Jews of Amsterdam. His gravestone is absolutely gorgeous. The costs of the stone were paid for by Neve Salom, the bill amounted to the staggering sum of 464 guilders and 11 stuvers. Isaac Uziel earned a salary of on average 545 guilders in those years. That 464 guilders would have been somewhat less than 14000 euros in the year 2021. Neve Salom must have appreciated its Haham Isaac Uziel. Alas, the entry in the one register that is left of Neve Salom does not mention the name of the artist who made the gravestone. https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/scans/334/2.1/start/40/limit/10/highlight/1
