***Breaking News! Birth and Death records of the City of Amsterdam are now searchable through Transkribus.***The City Archives of Amsterdam have put the civil registry online through their partnership with Read&Search from Transkribus. The civil registry has Birth, Marriage, and Death Records, which began in 1811. That is very good news because the birth and death records were only available through contemporary indices, here: https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/details/5009/withscans/0/findingaid/5009/start/0/limit/10/flimit/5 Or, you could try to find your way through the films that FamilySearch offers which is even more cumbersome. Now you can search by name. Begin your search on the homepage of Read&Search, by searching for a name. At first, it's a bit confusing because it looks like results from notarial records and the civil registry appeared mixed together.https://amsterdam-city-archives.transkribus.eu/searchThere are two ways to search. You can first fill in a name, click search, and then tick the box Burgerlijke Stand to the left. The second option allows you to narrow down your search to e.g. Deaths. Search for a name, then in the tabs above, click the tab Geboorten/Huwlijken/Overlijden, then the option: Overlijden, and click Set.Search results appear in random order. Clicking on them takes you to a page with the original record and a transcription next to it. ChatGPT or another AI system gives better results in translating the text into other languages than Google Translate.Have fun researching your family!
