My name is Yossi Geller, and I am doing a PHD at Bar Ilan University. My focus is on the Conversos in the Beira region of Portugal (north - east region). The towns of Belmonte, Covilha, Brancaga, Seia and others had rich Converso communities at the turn of the 20th Century. In Covilha of 1929 there were approximately 6,000 Conversos, around 40% of the community. Located 15 min. away from Belmonte, Covilha’s Conversos had a functioning synagogue and were completely integrated in the town’s developing wool and textile industry. They were deeply connected to Judaism and pre-1948 Israel. At the heart of their resurgence, a few years later, the Conversos of Covilha vanished… or did they? My journey is to find out whether they vanished or simply went underground. And why? I am looking for any leads, contacts, networks or stories? Any information that will decipher the mystery of the Beira Conversos.
