Sunday 7 September 2025*Edirne once held one of the world’s largest Sephardic communities. Drawing on Ladino, French, Turkish, and English sources, Jacob Daniels traces how upheavals from the Young Turk Revolution to the Thracian violence of 1934 reshaped their identity: wary of Zionism under Alliance schools, briefly supportive during the Greek occupation, then forced into silence under the Turkish Republic. Prosperous yet resented, Edirne’s Jews became the last minority in a sensitive borderland, and the 1934 attacks—though not fatal—drove most to Istanbul, ending centuries of communal life.Jacob Daniels earned his History PhD at Stanford. He now serves as Assistant Professor of Instruction and Assistant Director of the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. The meeting premieres TODAY, Sunday 7 September 2025, at 11 noon in LA, 2pm in NYC, 7pm in London, 8pm in Paris/Amsterdam, 9pm in Jerusalem, and 4am the next morning in Sydney. He will share new details about the family. Sasportas (1610–1698) belonged to a noted North African Sephardic family. He was a fierce anti-Sabbatean polemicist, and served the London, Livorno, Amsterdam, and Hamburg communities. His influence survives to this day in the Western Sephardic minhag (religious tradition) which rejects mystical beliefs.Do you want to join us live for this meeting? Portugal was the crucible of the Western Sephardim. Not everyone left. Is there such a thing as Sephardic DNA? Can members of diaspora Sephardic communities be linked to individuals in Portugal? What can genetic studies in Portugal tell us about Sephardic migration? Can genetics be a tool in unravelling the history of the Sephardic diaspora?Inês Nogueiro was born in northeastern Portugal, a region with a rich Jewish history. For the last 15 years, she has studied Iberian Jewish history from a population genetics perspective. She has a Ph.D. in Biology (Population Genetics of Jewish populations) from the University of Oporto. In 2018 she started a project with Prof Karl Skorecki at Bar Ilan University in Israel to construct a genetic database for the Iberian Sephardic Jews. She volunteers for a number of initiatives to promote interest in Sephardic history.[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXIywXv9bNY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXIywXv9bNY)*Best wishes**Ton and David **Sephardic World*
