Orfeão da CovilhãIf you walk the streets of Covilha, Portugal you will see multiple “Star of David” symbols throughout the town. Some will say the symbol is of the Estrela (star) mountain which is adjacent to Covilha. However, another theory may be that Crypto-Jews who were influential in the industrial town durring the early 19C clandestinely placed Jewish/Zionist symbols everywhere. Yes, the “Star of David” is not an exclusively Jewish symbol, but in the mid 19C and onwards it was often associated with Judaism and later-on with Zionism. The “Orfeão da Covilhã” is a local choir and folkloric / cultural group that was established in 1926, a period when the Crypto Jewish community was at its heyday, with over 6,000 inhabitants (out of approx. 18,000). When the Jewish community had a local synagogue - Shari Kabbala. And is David’s Harp a coincidence…or am I stretching it?
