Even as a nine-year-old boy, I could feel that something deeply special was happening. As I got older, it surprised me to learn that most communities did not treat the reading of this passage in an equivalent way. I remember feeling a quiet disappointment, as if something that had meant so much to me was not as widely shared (or even understood) as I had believed. Still, wherever I go and whatever synagogue I find myself in on Shabbat Yitro, it is Mr Abinun's voice that I hear in my mind’s ear. His warmth, his feeling, and the way he brought those words to life remain with me, carrying the wonder I felt as a child. How many of you share that memory? This recording, which owes so much to his influence, is a tribute to him and an expression of the tremendous debt of gratitude that I owe him.
