On Sunday, May 15th, the historic Monastirioton Synagogue in Thessaloniki was re-dedicated. The synagogue had been built by Jews from Monasitir who had come to Thessaloniki and the end of the 19h and beginning of the 20th century. The Aroeste family was instrumental in its creation. It opened for services in 1926 and became the only synagogue in Thessaloniki to survive WWII since the Red Cross took it over. After the war, it became the symbolic place to hold weddings of the survivors and was only open for special occasions. The Greek-Jewish architect, Elias Messinas, was instrumental in initiating its original preservation. It has now been restored to its former glory.
