The archives of Bevis Marks Synagogue preserve the history of the earliest Spanish & Portuguese Jews’ Congregation in London from their beginnings in the mid-17th century. The first account book in 5436 recorded offerings by Yehidim and Forasteiros (foreigners or strangers). It was in 5439 that the Gabay also recorded expenditures on the Esnoga, the congregation and poor. For Pesah 5439, there are 5 entries on the accounts that are shown handwritten on the accounting page and transcribed in the original spelling below. It seems that 629 lb of matzah are distributed to the poor along with Semurim and Garozet.Would our knowledgeable members care to offer a complete and more accurate translation?5439Pago a o H.
