For those in New Mexico: A genetics conference will explore the presence in New Mexico of breast and ovarian cancer and of numerous other genetic conditions found here among Hispanic families of Sephardic and converso heritage and non-Eastern European Jewish communities. The all-day event will run from 9.30am-4pm, Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana Blvd NE (just south of Montgomery), in Albuquerque.The conference is open to all. Those with a family history of BRCA-related cancers or other genetic conditions will have an opportunity to learn from the day’s speakers.Well-known local speakers include Dr. Victor E. Vigil (oncologist, cancer genetics), Dr. Michael N. Linver (diagnostic radiologist), Dr. Linda Smith (breast surgeon), Bernadette Martinez (Northern New Mexico outreach) are among the speakers. Dr. Gidon Akler, medical director and chief medical officer of GenebyGene.com, (Houston, Texas; parent company of FamilyTreeDNA), will discuss worldwide screening programs for Jews and those of Jewish heritage. Additionally, both Rabbi Harry Rosenfeld of Congregation Albert and Father Patrick Schafer of Holy Family Church will speak briefly on the importance of learning about how these conditions impact all communities.Brochures and printed materials will also be available.Events like this can save lives here in New Mexico, and is the reason that the Jewish Genealogical Society of New Mexico is sponsoring this event.The conference begins at 9.30am and runs through 4pm.
