https://youtu.be/ECV_8R2XtCg# Psalm 150 - Halleluyah - M. Moss | LondonAs a young boy singing in the Lauderdale Road Synagogue choir, I was especially struck by the exuberance of the congregation's melody for Psalm 150; although “exuberant” was probably not a word I knew at the time. It was sung at weddings as the Hatan and Kallah departed the Huppah, and it rang out on the eves of Simchat Torah and Shabbat Beresheet, palpably lifting the spirits of all those present. Its composer was one Matthew Moss, about whom little seems to be known. An online search reveals that he served as choirmaster at the London Great Synagogue, and that his grandson, who shared his name, later became a Member of Parliament in New Zealand.Despite the lack of biographical detail, Moss left the Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi tradition of London two musical treasures: this setting of Psalm 150, and a unique composition for Psalm 29, traditionally sung by the ḥazzan and choir once a year, on the eve of Shabbat Beresheet. If you haven't already, please subscribe and hit the like button.
