https://youtu.be/_6wfUWBcVEI# Chishki Chizki – Abraham de Casseres | Amsterdam 18th CenturyChishki Chizki is a Piyyut written in 1675 by Haham Yitshak Aboab de Fonseca to celebrate the inauguration of the new Esnoga in Amsterdam. Approximately twenty years later, Abraham de Casseres, who served as the Amsterdam community’s composer-in-residence, set the text to music. His setting, a refined, three-part polyphonic composition, reflects the baroque musical sensibilities of the period. Notable features include 'call-and-response' motifs, echoing phrases, and an emphasis on ensemble balance, where no single voice dominates. The Chishki Chizki composition was traditionally performed on Shabbat Nahamu which coincides with the date on which the anniversary of the dedication of the Esnoga is observed. Not coincidentally, perhaps, the Shabbat following Tisha BeAb, symbolizing comfort and renewal after a period of mourning resonates with the experiences of the Sephardi Jews who found refuge in Amsterdam following their expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula.Performing on this recording are members of my family. Please like and share.
