[https://youtu.be/Tid5hl_tDw4](https://youtu.be/Tid5hl_tDw4)# Echoes of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s defeat at the Battle of Culloden Continue to Reverberate in the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogues of LondonThe connection between the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and the musical repertoire of the Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi community of London is a matter rarely considered. The uprising was decisively crushed at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746 by government forces led by the Duke of Cumberland. And it was in the Duke’s honour that George Frideric Handel composed the oratorio Judas Maccabaeus, presenting him allegorically as Judah the Maccabee. This monumental work has sixty-eight movements. Among them is the resplendent chorus “See, the Conquering Hero Comes.” Its memorable and stirring melody has found new life in many settings over the centuries. One of these is in the synagogues of the Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi tradition in London, where it is used for En Kelohenu during the festival of Hanukkah. Notes for Nerds The first five strophes presented in this recording stay close to Handel’s original composition, while the more modern setting of the final strophe, distinguished by a rich bass countermelody composed by one of the congregation’s choirmasters, adds a distinctive and endearing home-grown touch. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more music from the Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi tradition. Hanukkah Alegre!
