A question about body position during lecha dodi. Perhaps this has been discussed before: apologies if that is the case:In Shearith Israel (NY) there is a strong custom not to turn your back to the hehal (Ark) - the pews are oriented north and south facing the teba in the center/rear of the sanctuary.Congregants stand up at באי בשלום and face forward (i.e. center - not toward the ark) then bow slightly toward the back of the synagogue at the first באי כלה, and slightly toward the היכל at the second באי כלה, then bow forward- i.e. to the center of the synagogue. It is considered bad form to turn fully with one's back to the ark. The hazanim sit on the teba - naturally face the היכל (east) , they bow first to the right (south) then left (north), then lastly forward toward the היכל. They never face West at all. My question is whether this is a shared custom/convention among other S&P congregations? How is באי בשלום choreographed in London, Amsterdam, Paris, etc...In NY proper body position is being forgotten and more and more people in the pews are turning their bodies with their back to the hekhal. Not sure how to stop the trend. Or if I should even try.
