Western Sephardim and Indo-Iraqi Jews:In my lived experience as well as in my reading, I see a pattern repeated a few times, which is the overlap in several key experiences between Western Sephardim and Indo-Iraqis. I am interested to discuss this with our group, to see whether/why you agree or disagree. Parallels that I have noticed are:1) Relationship to the British and Dutch colonial empires2) “Double diaspora” experience from both Israel and another area (Iberian Peninsula or Iraq)3) Linkage to a broad maritime commercial network (Atlantic or Indian Ocean)4) Early tendency to modernization, especially among the laity5) Sharing rabbinic networks, especially the colonies using that of the metropole6) Possibly irrevocable loss of the old rabbinical cultures and institutions after WWII 7) Tendency to caucus together in synagogues in the metropole after decolonization, leading both to competition and mutual initiativesWould it be fair to say that the Western Sephardim and Indo-Iraqis have merged in the late phase of the existence of both?
