https://youtu.be/x9XIT0_nacM# En Kelohenu - ‘Great Kaddish’ Melody | London - Jerusalem - AmsterdamKnown as the 'Kaddish' melody in London, or the ‘Great Kaddish’ melody in Amsterdam, this piece is one of the most iconic in the Spanish and Portuguese repertoire. Despite these designations, however, it seems highly probable that this tune was originally a composition for the piyyut En Kelohenu. Almost certainly of Italian provenance, it appears in Federico Consolo’s ‘Shirei Israel’, a compendium of the Livorno-Venice Portuguese tradition, under the heading 'Mussaf Lemo’adim'. It is also included as a melody for En Kelohenu in the Aguilar-De Sola anthology, ‘Ancient Melodies Of The Liturgy Of The Spanish And Portuguese Jews’Happily, although maybe somewhat incongruously, a variant of this melody has materialised in recent years in Israel. Transcribed by the celebrated musicologist Yitzhak Levy and popularised by Yehoram Gaon, it is frequently sung to En Kelohenu in many synagogues that follow the Yerushalmi tradition. The present recording opens with the London tune, followed by the Yerushalmi variant, and ends with the Amsterdam version. Please like and share.H/T Professor Edwin Seroussi.
