During World War II, Rabbi David de Sola Pool worked on behalf of the National Jewish Welfare Board in preparing siddurim for US Armed Forces. He also composed this prayer which I just located in an anthology of mainly Christian prayers, but with six or so prayers by Jews (almost all rabbis). I think Rabbi de Sola Pool's prayer fits into a small genre of prayers composed for troops to inspire their morale and temper their conduct by grounding them in their memory of who they were as civilians with thoughts of home life.
