Despite the absence of any formal connection between his music and the Spanish and Portuguese tradition, isolated examples of his work have found their way into the musical canon of the communities of New York and Amsterdam.Congregation Shearith Israel has two pieces from his collection ‘Shirim Asher LiShlomo’, both of which are actually transcriptions. The first is a melody originally composed for the Kaddish, but which was refitted as a setting for Adon Olam by the Parisian Hazzan, Samuel Naumbourg (1817-1880). The second is a composition for Psalm 146 which, during the twentieth century, was applied to the text of the Mi Sheberach sung by the choir as the Parnas walks from his Banca to the Teba, before announcing the distribution of Mitzvot on Shabbat and Festive mornings. In the Amsterdam congregation, a monophonic version of his composition for ‘Eleh Mo’adei Hashem’ is sung on the eves of the Shalosh Regalim. The present recording is based on this Amsterdam rendering, to which new harmonies have been added.Hodesh TobPlease like and share
