https://youtu.be/nJoq1iNrUWg# En Kelohenu - Yamim Nora’im | Amsterdam, London and New YorkThis chant, often referred to by musicologists as ‘Lachan Yedei Rashim’, is one of the musical mainstays of the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur repertoire. It provides the setting for the Reshuyot sung before the Barechu introducing Shachrit: Yedei Rashim (R Yehuda Halevi),Yah Shimkha (R Yehuda Halevi) and Shinanim Sha’ananim (R Shelomo Ibn Gabirol). It also variously serves as the hallmark High Holiday melody for En Kelohenu, Adon Olam, Yigdal Elohim Chai and the Kaddish.Within the Spanish and Portuguese tradition, the New York and Amsterdam variants, although not quite identical, bear a close similarity to each other. The London version, however, differs markedly from the other two by introducing a modulation after the first three bars, where it remains until reverting to the original key in the coda. Although nobody has definitively accounted for how this intriguing difference came to be, it is probably traceable to the process of transcribing the melody undertaken by de Sola and Aguilar for their anthology published in 1857.This recording presents all three variants in the form of a medley. Opening with the Amsterdam style, it transitions to the London version and ends with the melody sung in New York. Please like and share.
