https://youtu.be/6NNqenvWGZU# Moshe Ubnei Yisrael | AmsterdamIn contrast to the eastern Sephardi musical traditions which are based on a complex array of Maqamim, the Spanish and Portuguese rite utilises a fixed system of non-metrical but highly defined melodic patterns. For the most part these recitatives are chanted as a solo by the Hazzan. Certain passages, however, having undergone a process of organic elaboration, have been transformed over time into a ‘melody’ sung by the congregation. An example of this phenomenon from the Amsterdam repertoire is in the ‘Emet Veyatsib’ following the Keriyat Shema on Shabbatot.
