Willow at Hoshangna Rabbah: In a recent conversation with Rabbi Jonathan Cohen we discussed whether the use of the willow on Hoshangna Rabbah was an original S and P custom or a Moroccan import. I have a copy of Levi's Spanish and Portuguese Book of Service for the day, where he notes " On this day every person has a branch of willow". He refers to this elsewhere as "The Mitzvah of the Willow of Hoshangna the Great"....the question is, how was the willow used in the service? When was it held? During the Hoshangna? Nowadays if I recall, we just pick it up at the end of the service, and beat it on the floor. From Levi's footnote, it looks like it had some other role in the service?
