A question on Western Sephardic minhag came up in a class on our custom regarding our tradition on head coverings for men and women. Our family minhag was for men only to cover their head in synagogue and while praying or studying.Unmarried women never wore a headcovering and married women only in synagogue(many married women never wore a headcovering at anytime. All I have to reference is pictures of my family gatherings going back to 1870(?) and oil paintings going back even earlier. I know this is all custom and and not Torah law. What I would like to know what was the universal practice among Western Sephardic Jews. The women in my family always dressed according to the custom of the country where they lived. G-d forbid they would stand out in public as looking religious!!! This is true in my family today.!!! All I am asking is what was the norm.If you can help me out on this subject I would greatly appreciate this.. Thanks.
