In the Spanish and Portuguese communities of Amsterdam and London this inclusion, from one of the most widely known in the genre, forms the prelude to the ceremony, but is limited to just the Piyyut's refrain. The New York congregation's approach is more expansive, supplementing the refrain with the addition of the first and last strophes.The present recording, based on the style of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York, is a distinctive recitative set in a minor key incorporating some intriguing modulations.
