https://youtu.be/9Ptrw_-dbog# Mizmor Ledavid - Psalm 29 - Artom | London I can’t help thinking that this melody, or something very like it, might well have been what King David had in mind when he penned the words to Psalm 29.Written by Benjamin Artom, Haham of the London Spanish and Portuguese congregation between 1866 to 1879, it is one of two compositions by him that are included in that community's musical canon; the other being a setting for Adon Olam. Both pieces share a similar format and are reflective of trends in early nineteenth century Italian opera. In recognition of the composition’s stately classical structure, this setting for Mizmor Ledavid is endearingly referred to by members of the London Spanish and Portuguese community's choir as ‘The Big Mizmor'.Unfathomably, however, despite its undeniable majesty - so appropriate to accompanying the Sefer on its journey back to the Hechal - this magnificent melody is not known in any other synagogue in the world. A matter in urgent need of rectification. The present recording is based on an arrangement by Jacob Hadida, choirmaster to the Spanish and Portuguese congregation of London between 1933 to 1937 and again from 1945 to 1954.Please like and share, and if you haven’t already, please subscribe to my YouTube channel.
