https://youtu.be/aHK4Rf80OpY# En Kelohenu - ‘Italian’ | LondonThis tune for En Kelohenu is from the London Spanish and Portuguese congregation's repertoire. Often referred to as the 'Italian' melody, its composition has been attributed to Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739). As Professor Edwin Seroussi makes clear, however, Marcello was not actually its composer. The piece was, in fact, one of several transcriptions he made from the various traditions then current in the Jewish community of Venice in preparation for his monumental collection 'Estro Poetico Armonico'. From Marcello’s notes it appears that this melody was in use in the Venetian Ashkenazi community as a setting for Psalm 114, 'Betset Yisrael Mimitsrayim'. How and when it arrived in London and came to be applied to the Piyyut En Kelohenu remain open questions. The present recording is based on an arrangement by ER Jessurun, formerly choirmaster to the Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation of London. Please like and share, and if you haven’t already, please subscribe to my YouTube channel. For an mp3 of this recording please visit my website, where there are over 190 selections available for free downloading.
