I know this has been discussed extensively before, but to my great surprise I found an interesting quotation in the English translation by Eitz Echad Publishing (www.eitzechad.com) of the *Kitzur Shulchan Arukh: Shulchan Tahor *of Rabbi Joseph Pardo:Section 3: Laws relating to Tefillin3. On Rosh Chodesh [New Moon] the *tefillin* are taken off before the Musaf [Additional] Service, and **on the Intermediate Days of a Festival they are taken off before *hallel***. But the Reader takes off the *tefillin* after *hallel* on Chol HaMoed Pesach [the Intermediate Days of Passover], and before *hallel* on Chol HaMoed Sukkot [the Intermediate Days of Tabernacles].Does this imply that some Spanish & Portuguese Jews put on* tefillin *on Chol HaMoed in the past?
