I'd like to develop a transliteration style (for transliterating prayers to sing along for people who can't read or struggle with Hebrew) that balances readability with exactitude, and can also be easily read in an S&P pronunciation as well as traditional American Ashkenazi and/or contemporary Israeli pronunciations.I feel like the biggest challenge so far is how to encode the 'soft bet'. I think years ago I saw an Aram Soba siddur that transliterated it with Ṿ (V with underdot, so Aram Ṣoṿa) to signal "most Jews pronounce this [v] but if you want to be authentic to our community, we do it [b]", which seems like a great idea, but I'm worried about people misreading ṿ as y.What do y'all think? Should I ṿorrow the Ṿ from the Syrians?If you want to suggest something else, it should ideally be a pre-composed Unicode character that is easily accessible from the Mac "ABC – Extended" keyboard setting.
