Do we really need to tell people in 5785 that no Jew past or present should ever be called "marrano"? It is not a historical group of people, "the marranos". That word is a slur which is largely anachronistic, popularized by historian Heinrich Geaetz. It means swine, pig. No group ever historically identified as such. It was rarely used during the time of the inquisition, and only by the side of the inquisition the way any other slur referring to hated people is used. I personally take great offense to the use of this word. STOP IT! Do we really need to discuss this or can we be respectful adults in this day and age?
