I have a question for the learned members of this group. Is there documentary evidence on whether or not the Portuguese Jews had to formally convert when they reached Amsterdam and joined the Community? I have read many varying opinions from Historians on the topic but I would like to know if there is ACTUAL documentary evidence of this. Did they return with a formal conversion? Were they accepted as returnees or as converts?
