My mother was a daughter of Benjamin Wingate Barrow who settled in Cape Town. The name Wingate is a reference to the related Wingate family of Orde Wingate ("Hayedid"). I grew up as an Anglican, particularly as a member of the Church of the Province of South Africa, a breakaway from the Church of England into which the Barrows converted a century earlier. The Cape Town Barrows grew up without knowledge of their ancestry.
