The research with regard to my familiy tree is momentarily focused on my ancestor Abraham Levi Vitoria, alias Italiaender (old Dutch for Italian, c. 1639-1699), and his (grand-)children. He came from Venice and was initially married to an Ashkenazy wife, Rebecca Hammelburg, and later to a Portuguese wife, Gracia de Campos. I will post some messages about the links that this family had with both the Portuguese and Ashkenazy communities of Amsterdam in the near future. Now I would like to share the following document with you, which I found in the archives of the Portuguese community of Amsterdam (belonging to 119AA-18), regarding the last will and testament of Gracia Levi Vitoria, Abraham’s aunt. This document is a deed dated to 1679, which is written in Dutch by a Dutch Notary and Tabellion Public in London, Lucas Emans. In this deed “Benjamin Levy” in London gives a proxy of attorney to his son “Abraham Levi Victoria” in Amsterdam to act on his behalf regarding the settlement of the testament of his sister in law “Gracia Levy Victoria”. Lucas Emans can be linked to the Portuguese community of London, according to L.D. Barnett, El Libro de los Acuerdos, Being The Records and Accompts of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of London from 1663 to 1681. Lucas E(i)mans is mentioned in the index and shows up in the archives. This is also true for the two witnesses that are mentioned in the deed: Antonio Gomez Serra and Manuel Lopez Pereira, both mentioned as Gabay at some point in the London archives. If this is the case for these persons, it is tempting to identify "my" Benjamin as the Benjamin Levi in the archives of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of London, who is mentioned as Sohet, Bodek and Hazan.
