While working on my sephardic family I noticed that not all of my ancestors came from Portugal, indeed I have just realised that the de la Penha family seem to have come from southern Spain and gradually moved north into Bayonne France, before settling in Amsterdam. However, the son of Abraham de la Penha b. 1663? d. Amsterdam 1732, seems to have had a son called Isaac de la Penha born in Simaria Portugal in 1869? I tried a Google map search but perhaps the name Simaria might have been misread by researchers or alternatively it's a town or village that no loger exists. Does anyone have a clue as to what or where 'Simaria' might have been? (The family sometimes bears the name de la Penha Castro) I found some of my information of the My Heritage site of Brian Freedman so if he is present perhaps he can contact me directly. {curiously the coat of arms of the original family seems to be that of Fernadez, 5 fleur de lis, on background azure inside shield bordered in red.}
