Hello all. It's an honor to join such an interesting group. I descend from a Lithuanian Jewish family. So, what am I doing here, on a Sephardic page? I am here due to DNA testing results and some old family legends. Here's a story of my research:In 2015 I took a Y37 test on FamilytreeDNA. Interestingly enough, amongst my matches there was a Mexican gentlemen named Parra. At the same time, I also matched a Lithuanian Jew from a Geffen family. Looking at a Geffen family genealogical page, I found that they claim to be of Sephardic descent. I then saw that "Geffen" and "Parra" are one and the same surname - both mean "grapevine" in respectively Hebrew and Spanish. This made me suspect that both descend from the same family. I then underwent SNP testing and found that I also match Mr. Parra there, we both belong to a J-SK1344 haplogroup. This haplogroup is mostly found in Iberian Peninsula, and almost every person who tested for it claimed to come from Bnei Anussim. There are also Arabs from Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia who belong to it, as well as several Irish and British persons and one man from the Netherlands. I am only a 2nd Eastern European Jew who tested positive for it (another gentleman is from Romania). Very helpful administrators of FTDNA's Iberian Ashkenaz project agreed that my paternal line is likely Sephardic. Mr. Parra and myself had a common ancestor about 500 years ago. With this, I am trying to trace the steps of my ancestors from Spain/Portugal and to Eastern Europe. There were known Sephardic communities in Poland and Lithuania that eventually assimilated into the Ashkenazi majority population. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
