In 1683 the Spanish Sephardic poet, Daniel Levi de Barrios, speaks of the rabbi of Itamaracá, Jacob Lagarto, and informs us that Lagarto wrote a book of aphorisms.Barrios also tells us that there were two synagogues in Brazil ..... One in Recife headed by Aboab and Aguilar (1642)...... of the other he only says it had an "angelic" title, but more importantly he tells us that by 1640 it already had a "lustrum", which is a period of five years, meaning that the unnamed synagogue was founded in 1635, the same year that Colonel Arciszewski formalised religious tolerance in the agreement which he wrote regarding the portuguese surrender of the fort in Paraiba.
