Hello everyone. Sorry for the long post. Several months ago Ton Tielen convincingly showed that HH Mos. Raph. de Aguilar (1) was the son of “Abraham,” not “Isaac” and (2) had a brother, David, who became a member of the Dotar. I have been wondering whether the Isaac that was discussed in the postings was another brother. The reason I think this is a possibility is based on two Dotar records and two pages from the records of the Bazil community.First, in 1655 Hana, the orphaned daughter of Isack de Agilar (spelled “Aguilar” on the 1654 list), married Isaque Baruk. See the entry on the bottom right hand side.https://archief.amsterdam/api/file/A/yB253jd3y0xTKFoPUThSRTtMxMEk*PR0ocgT9fI-czPbE00NmHLVPp9flaYTcPKQsUc4kjMJ*idUKAsELIkjbg/f/A01948000128-highres.pdfIsaque’s signature seems to be the same as these two signatures in the Brazilian records:6th signature in the second column of signatureshttps://archief.amsterdam/api/file/A/yB253jd3y0xTKFoPUThSRTtMxMElzYHLR6kUXH9O4Zp96-bfgeBJoZGHSSTCMYUq8YFbFvvWmkZR7ZGyQkkncQ/f/A05674000009-highres.pdf6th signature in the first column of signatureshttps://archief.amsterdam/api/file/A/yB253jd3y0xTKFoPUThSRTtMxMElzYYREP--7urHvUNX14hzLRF20E8hPWFUdlCMWQoXV7z47g0Rnpymh2vX3Q/f/A05674000011-highres.pdfAfter David de Aguilar became a member of the Dotar, we see a 1668 entry for Rachel, daughter of Ishack Baruh do Brazil (#57, right side of the page). Rachel is described as having a 2nd degree relationship to David Aguilar.https://archief.amsterdam/api/file/A/yB253jd3y0xTKFoPUThSRTtMxMElmT4yC3QsPKcSk0z*Ieknm8oj-Lj66Ga6pq-MIy12XNPdgDzKPVNIV4QjrQ/f/A01949000063-highres.pdfI believe HH Mos. Raph. de Aguilar stepped into the same role after David died; it is also my recollection that HH Mos. Raph.’s son Isaac eventually became 3rd grao to the Baruks.Although Isaque Baruk was obviously living in Amsterdam at this time, the geographic appellation would have been useful to distinguish him from others with the same name.Could a 2nd grao relationship extend to a grand uncle? I am not sure if I understand the Portuguese descriptions, This is a relevant concern since Hana was David’s niece, not Rachel Baruk. Of course, if Isaac were actually David’s father, rather than a brother, the 2nd grao relationship would fit, but let’s not go there.
